Koh Samui 5-Day Itinerary: A Relaxed Day-by-Day Plan

Five days is a good length for Koh Samui. You get time for the island’s two best full-day trips (one at sea, one inland), a half-day with elephants, an evening at Fisherman’s Village and a flexible fifth day, without rushing from one tour to the next. This Koh Samui 5-day itinerary also leaves slack for the weather, which matters more on an island than most people expect.

The plan assumes your first day starts around midday after you arrive, and that you have a full Day 5. If you fly out on Day 5, use the “light last day” option.

Your 5 days at a glance

Day Theme Main plan Evening Transport
Day 1 Arrive and settle in Beach time, Lad Koh Viewpoint Dinner in Chaweng or Lamai Taxi or hotel transfer
Day 2 Islands by catamaran Five Islands, Koh Tan, Pig Island (9:00–9:40 AM pickup to ~4:30 PM) Quiet dinner nearby Included hotel transfers
Day 3 Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari Big Buddha, Chaweng village, temples, Namuang Waterfall 1, Hin Ta & Hin Yai (pickup from 9:30 AM, back ~4:30 PM) Muay Thai or night market Included hotel transfers
Day 4 Elephants + north coast Samui Elephant Kingdom (about 3 hours), Wat Plai Laem Fisherman’s Village, Bophut Included transfers, then taxi
Day 5 Your choice Ang Thong, Koh Phangan, or a south and west coast loop West-coast sunset Tour transfer, ferry or private driver

Tour costs for Days 2–4 (per adult): 1-Day Catamaran ฿3,300 + Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari ฿1,950 + Samui Elephant Kingdom ฿3,000 = ฿8,250. For a child aged 5–11: ฿1,900 + ฿1,650 + ฿1,700 = ฿5,250. A family of two adults and one child aged 5–11 pays ฿21,750 for the three tours. Under-5s go free on all three trips, so they add ฿0 to the total. Day 5 costs depend on which option you pick.

Where to stay for 5 days

With five nights you can choose for atmosphere rather than convenience. Chaweng puts you near the most restaurants and nightlife. Bophut and Bang Rak are quieter but close to the airport and Fisherman’s Village. Lamai is more laid-back, and the west coast is best for sunsets. All three Samui Journey tours in this plan include hotel pickup. See where to stay in Koh Samui for a full comparison.

Day 2 of this Koh Samui 5-day itinerary: the catamaran cruising to the southern islands

Day 1: Arrive, swim and get your bearings

Samui Airport is in the north-east of the island, so most hotels in Chaweng, Bophut and Bang Rak are a short drive away.

  • Afternoon: check in, then head straight to the beach. Our guide to the best beaches in Koh Samui will help you pick one near your hotel.
  • Late afternoon: if you’re staying on the east coast, stop at Lad Koh Viewpoint on the ring road between Chaweng and Lamai. It’s free, and ten minutes there gets you a view back along the coast. The small bay at Silver Beach (Crystal Bay) is nearby if you want another swim.
  • Evening: dinner in Chaweng or Lamai. Both have night markets, but days and times change, so check locally. Our night markets guide explains what to expect.

Get an early night. Day 2 starts with a hotel pickup between 9:00 and 9:40 AM.

Day 2: Five Islands, Koh Tan and Pig Island by catamaran

The sea day goes early in the trip on purpose. If the weather postpones it, you still have Days 3, 4 and 5 to reschedule.

Time What happens
9:00–9:40 AM Hotel pickup and transfer to Bang Kao Pier on the south coast
10:30 AM Depart Bang Kao Pier on a VIP four-engine catamaran with a toilet on board
11:20 AM Five Islands (Koh Si Koh Ha): limestone cliffs with swiftlet nests, seen from the boat
11:50 AM Koh Tan: snorkelling, paddleboard, kayak, floating sea pool, banana boat, springboard and water slide, plus Thai massage on board, all included in the price
12:45 PM Lunch served on board, with free-flow cocktails, mocktails and soft drinks all day
2:50 PM Koh Madsum (Pig Island): meet the pigs on the beach
Late afternoon Sail back to Bang Kao Pier, then transfer to your hotel
~4:30 PM Back at your hotel

Bring: swimwear, towel, reef-friendly sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and a dry bag for your phone.

Day 3: The inland side of Samui on a 4×4 safari

Day 3 swaps the sea for temples, villages, forest and waterfalls on our Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari, which gets around by 4×4 pickup truck.

Time Stop
From 9:30 AM Hotel pickup (time depends on your area)
10:20 AM Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai)

3:00 PM Rubber-tapping demonstration
4:00 PM Hin Ta & Hin Yai (Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks)
4:30 PM Return to your hotel

The itinerary may be adjusted for weather. Bring: clothes that cover shoulders and knees, swimwear for the waterfall, shoes with grip and insect repellent.

Evening: watch Muay Thai at Phetchbuncha Stadium in Chaweng (fight nights run on set evenings, so check the schedule), or eat at a local restaurant in Lamai.

Book Day 3

Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari · Adult ฿1,950 · Child (5–11) ฿1,650 · Under 5 free · Includes hotel transfers, English- and Chinese-speaking guide, lunch, soft drinks and accident insurance.

Day 4: Elephants, Wat Plai Laem and Fisherman’s Village

Morning: Samui Elephant Kingdom

We collect you from your hotel for a visit of about three hours to the sanctuary we support, Samui Elephant Kingdom. You learn what elephants eat, help prepare “Powerball” elephant food, feed the elephants from the Skywalk and have lunch with soft drinks. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent. Prefer a slow morning? Take the afternoon pickup instead and swap the order of this day.

Book Day 4

Samui Elephant Kingdom · About 3 hours · Morning or afternoon pickup · Adult ฿3,000 · Child (5–11) ฿1,700 · Under 5 free · Lunch and soft drinks included.

Afternoon: Wat Plai Laem

Take a taxi to Wat Plai Laem on the north-east tip, a temple built around a lake with an 18-armed Guanyin statue and a large Happy Buddha. Allow 30 to 45 minutes, then go for a swim at Bang Rak or Bophut.

Evening: Fisherman’s Village, Bophut

Spend the evening at Fisherman’s Village, a street of old wooden shophouses built by Chinese settlers that now holds restaurants, cafés and small shops. If Day 4 is a Friday, the Walking Street market fills the main road. On other nights it’s quieter, and a pleasant place for dinner by the water.

Day 3: guests waving from the roof of the 4x4 safari truck on a forest road

Day 5: Choose your own day

Day 5 also works as your weather backup. If your catamaran was postponed, move it here and do one of the options below on another day.

Option A: Ang Thong National Marine Park (full day)

Ang Thong is a national park of 42 islands west of Samui. Most day trips include the trail on Koh Mae Ko to a viewpoint over Thale Nai, an enclosed emerald lake, and some time for kayaking or swimming. It is usually closed from 1 November to 15 December, and trips can be cancelled in rough seas. You’ll have seen the southern islands on Day 2, and Ang Thong is a completely different seascape. Our Ang Thong or Pig Island comparison explains the differences, and Koh Samui boat trips covers other options. If you get seasick, don’t book it for the day straight after the catamaran.

Option B: Koh Phangan day trip

Ferries and speedboats from Nathon, Bang Rak and Maenam reach Koh Phangan in roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Arrange a driver on the other side to see its beaches and viewpoints, and check the time of the last ferry back before you leave Samui. Timetables change by season.

Option C: South and west coast loop (half or full day, with a driver)

Hire a private driver (agree the price and stops in advance) and take it slowly:

  1. Morning: the Secret Buddha Garden in the hills of Khao Pom, a sculpture garden started in 1976 by a retired durian farmer. The road is steep, so a driver who knows it is the safer choice. Entry fee applies.
  2. Late morning: Wat Khunaram on Route 4169, where the monk Luang Pho Daeng, who died in meditation in 1973, sits in a glass case.
  3. Lunch: Hua Thanon, a Muslim fishing village with colourful boats and a fish market. Dress modestly.
  4. Afternoon: Laem Sor Pagoda, a golden chedi at the water’s edge on the south coast.
  5. Sunset: the west coast at Lipa Noi or Taling Ngam, where the sun goes down over the sea towards the Five Islands and Ang Thong.

Option D: A light last day (good if you fly out)

Book a morning Thai cooking class or a massage, have a long lunch, and save your energy for the journey. Many cooking schools run morning sessions, so check current times.

Transport tips for this Koh Samui 5-day itinerary

  • Days 2, 3 and 4 (morning) include hotel transfers, so you only need your own transport on Day 1, Day 4 afternoon, Day 5 and in the evenings.
  • Taxis: usually a fixed price rather than the meter. Agree the fare before you get in.
  • Songthaews: shared pickups on the ring road (Route 4169). Flag one down and agree the fare. They’re cheaper but slower.
  • Ride-hailing apps: they work on Samui, but cars can be scarce late at night or away from Chaweng.
  • Private driver: the easiest way to do Day 5’s Option C, and often good value for a family or group.
  • Scooters: legally require a motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category. Roads get slippery in rain, and many insurance policies won’t cover you without the right licence.
Day 4: a guest hand-feeding elephants over the fence at Samui Elephant Kingdom

FAQ

Is 5 days in Koh Samui too long?

No. Five days lets you do the two big full-day trips and a half-day tour, and still have beach time and a spare day for the weather. Many visitors find it the most comfortable length for a first visit.

What is the best order for a 5-day Koh Samui trip?

Put your boat trip early (Day 2 in this plan) so you can reschedule if the sea is rough. Follow a full day with a lighter one, and keep the last day flexible.

Can I do both the catamaran and Ang Thong in 5 days?

Yes. They go to different areas. The catamaran visits Five Islands, Koh Tan and Pig Island to the south and south-west, while Ang Thong lies further west. Space them apart, and remember Ang Thong is usually closed from 1 November to 15 December.

Can I visit Koh Tao as a day trip from Koh Samui?

It’s possible but long, since the ferry takes a good part of the morning each way. If Koh Tao is a priority, stay a night or two there. For a one-day island hop, Koh Phangan is much closer.

How much does this Koh Samui 5-day itinerary cost?

The three tours in this plan cost ฿8,250 per adult. For a child aged 5–11 they cost ฿5,250, so a family of two adults and one child pays ฿21,750. Under-5s are free on all three trips. On top of that, budget for accommodation, meals outside the tours, transport and whatever you choose for Day 5. National park fees apply on Ang Thong trips.

What should I pack for this Koh Samui 5-day itinerary?

Swimwear, a light cover-up, reef-friendly sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a dry bag, insect repellent, shoes with grip for waterfalls and rocks, and at least one outfit that covers your shoulders and knees for temples.

What happens if it rains on my boat day?

If weather stops the 1-Day Catamaran, you are moved to a new date, with a full refund if that date is also affected. That’s why this plan keeps Day 5 flexible, so you can move the boat trip there.
