Koh Samui Honeymoon Things to Do: Romantic Day Trips and Experiences

Most couples spend the first couple of days of a Koh Samui honeymoon by the pool. Once you’re ready to leave the sun loungers, the best things to do for two include a day at sea among limestone islands, a quiet morning watching elephants, hilltop temples and a market by the water to round off the evening. We’ve picked the outings that work best for couples, with notes on timing them around the weather and a sample plan you can adapt.

Timing your honeymoon

Koh Samui’s weather doesn’t follow the rest of Thailand. The heaviest rain usually comes from around mid-October to early December, when the northeast monsoon reaches the Gulf of Thailand. A lot of people plan Thailand trips around a June-to-October “rainy season”, but on Samui those months often work perfectly well.

A November wedding doesn’t rule Samui out. Just leave some slack in the plan. Book half-day trips you can move around, and keep a spare day in case the boat trip has to be rescheduled.

Romantic honeymoon things to do on Koh Samui

A day on the water together

If you book one outing, make it a day at sea. Our 1-Day Catamaran leaves Bang Kao Pier on Samui’s south coast on a VIP four-engine catamaran with a toilet onboard. Hotel pickup runs between 9:00 and 9:40 AM, and you’re back at your hotel around 4:30 PM.

Everything on board is included in the price. For couples, the best parts are:

  • Thai massage on board, between swims
  • Free-flow cocktails, mocktails and soft drinks and lunch onboard, including som tam, sweet and sour chicken, salad and fruit
  • Snorkelling at Koh Tan, then kayaks or paddleboards to head off side by side
  • A floating sea pool for a calm swim off the stern, and a water slide and springboard if you’re feeling playful

Five Islands and Pig Island

The catamaran passes the Five Islands, limestone cliffs where swiftlets nest. You see them from the boat and don’t go ashore. The boat also stops at Koh Madsum, called Pig Island after the pigs that live on its beach, which makes a light-hearted change from the quieter parts of the day.

Spend a day at sea together

The 1-Day Catamaran includes hotel pickup, the Five Islands, snorkelling at Koh Tan, a floating sea pool, kayaks and paddleboards, Thai massage on board, lunch and free-flow drinks. Adults ฿3,300. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. See the 1-Day Catamaran

A morning with elephants, without riding

Seeing elephants is on many Thailand honeymoon lists, and many couples now want to do it responsibly. At Samui Elephant Kingdom, guests watch the herd from a 400-metre raised skywalk. The sanctuary’s official website says there is no riding and no bathing. We proudly support the sanctuary. The visit takes about 3 hours and includes hotel pickup, learning what elephants eat, making “Powerball” food, feeding from the Skywalk, and lunch with soft drinks. It’s a relaxed half day, and the afternoon stays free for the pool or a spa.

If you’re comparing elephant venues, our guide on how to choose an ethical elephant sanctuary lists the red flags to avoid.

See the island’s interior on a 4×4 day

To see a different side of Samui, take the Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari, which goes round by 4×4 pickup truck from 9:30 AM to about 4:30 PM. Stops include:

  • the Big Buddha
  • a Chaweng village experience where you make traditional khanom ko
  • Wat Sawang Arom
  • a durian orchard
  • Wat Teepangkorn on a mountain-top
  • lunch with a view
  • Namuang Waterfall 1
  • a rubber tapping demonstration
  • the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks

Hotel transfers, an English and Chinese-speaking guide, lunch and soft drinks are included. See the itinerary.

Temples at golden hour

Two of the island’s best-known temples sit close together on the north-east coast:

  • Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha) is a 12-metre golden seated Buddha, built in 1972 on Koh Faan, a small island joined to Samui by a causeway
  • Wat Plai Laem is known for its white 18-armed statue of Guanyin, the goddess of mercy, set by a lake

Go late in the afternoon, when the heat eases. Dress modestly, take shoes off where asked, and save the kissing photos for somewhere else.

The Secret Buddha Garden

The Secret Buddha Garden (also called the Magic Garden) is a sculpture garden high in the hills near Samui’s highest point. Nim Thongsuk, a retired durian farmer, started building it in 1976. The statues sit among forest and streams, and it’s noticeably cooler up there than on the coast. The road up is steep, so go with a driver or a 4×4 tour, not a rented scooter. Entry fees can change, so check them locally.

Waterfalls and rocks

  • Namuang Waterfall. Namuang 1 is an easy walk from the car park, with a pool at its base. Namuang 2 needs a longer, steeper walk.
  • Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks, the “Grandfather and Grandmother” rock formations south of Lamai. A local legend lies behind the names.

An evening in Fisherman’s Village

Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village is a street of old wooden shophouses facing the sea, now home to restaurants and bars. On Friday evenings it turns into a walking-street market with food stalls and crafts. Other nights are quieter, which suits a slow dinner by the water.

A beach day on Chaweng or Lamai

Chaweng is the island’s busiest beach, and Lamai to the south is a little calmer. For a quieter beach day, go to the north-coast bays around Bophut and Maenam. Check for swimming nets and flags, and don’t swim at dusk, as jellyfish are occasionally reported.

A sample 5-day honeymoon plan

Day Plan
1 Arrive, settle in, sunset drink at the hotel
2 Pool morning, late afternoon at Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem, dinner in Fisherman’s Village
3 1-Day Catamaran: Five Islands, Koh Tan, Pig Island, massage on board
4 Samui Elephant Kingdom (morning session), then spa or pool in the afternoon
5 Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari, or a lazy beach day if you’d rather rest

Don’t book full-day trips back to back. A rest day between outings keeps things relaxed.

Practical tips for couples

  • Sun. The sun is strong all day. Put on reef-safe sunscreen before snorkelling, and reapply after swimming.
  • Mosquitoes. Dengue occurs throughout Thailand, according to the US CDC. Use repellent at dawn and dusk, especially in the rainy months.
  • Jellyfish. Box jellyfish are occasionally reported around Samui. Swim in netted areas where you can. If you’re stung, pour vinegar over the sting for at least 30 seconds and get medical help.
  • Respect. Thai culture is reserved about public affection. Holding hands is fine, but keep anything more for private spaces, especially at temples.
  • Plan around rest days. Message us your dates and we’ll suggest how to fit the trips around them.

Add a hands-off elephant morning

Good to know

  • Catamaran minimum. The catamaran needs at least 40 guests to depart. If that isn’t reached, you can choose a new date or a full refund.
  • What’s included at sea. Life jackets, accident insurance and a first-aid kit are included on the catamaran.
  • Cancellations. The catamaran has free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. Later cancellations and no-shows aren’t refundable. See our refund policy for other trips.
  • Ang Thong National Marine Park. This archipelago of 42 islands, about 28 km from Samui, is another popular day trip for couples. Samui Journey doesn’t currently run it, so book with an operator that does and check the sea conditions.
  • Licensed operator. Samui Journey Co., Ltd. holds TAT licence No. 44/00252. Reach us on WhatsApp +66 94 751 4988 or by email at samuijourney.mk@gmail.com.
