Three days on Koh Samui is enough to see the island properly, as long as you plan around the sea and the clock. This Koh Samui 3-day itinerary gives you one full day on the water, one full day for the island’s temples, villages and waterfalls, and a lighter third day with a half-day elephant visit and time on your beach.
It assumes three full days on the island. If you arrive or leave mid-day, see “Fitting it around your flights” below.
Your 3 days at a glance
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening | Transport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1: Islands by catamaran | Hotel pickup 9:00–9:40, sail from Bang Kao Pier | Five Islands, Koh Tan snorkelling, lunch on board, Pig Island | Back ~4:30 PM, easy dinner nearby | Included hotel transfers |
| Day 2: Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari | Pickup from 9:30, then Big Buddha, Chaweng village, Wat Sawang Arom | Wat Teepangkorn, lunch with a view, Namuang Waterfall 1, rubber tapping, Hin Ta & Hin Yai | Back ~4:30 PM, dinner in Chaweng or Lamai | Included hotel transfers |
| Day 3: Elephants + north coast | Samui Elephant Kingdom (about 3 hours) | Wat Plai Laem, beach time | Sunset and dinner at Fisherman’s Village, Bophut | Elephant visit includes transfers, then taxi or driver |
Tour costs for this plan (per adult): 1-Day Catamaran ฿3,300 + Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari ฿1,950 + Samui Elephant Kingdom ฿3,000 = ฿8,250. For a child aged 5–11: ฿1,900 + ฿1,650 + ฿1,700 = ฿5,250. A family of two adults and one child aged 5–11 pays ฿21,750 for all three tours. Under-5s go free on all three trips, so they add ฿0 to the total. Meals outside the tours, taxis and evening plans are extra.
Before you start: where to base yourself
For a short stay, base yourself on the north or east coast (Chaweng, Bophut, Bang Rak, Choeng Mon or Lamai). You’ll be close to restaurants in the evenings, and all three trips in this plan include hotel pickup. Our guide on where to stay in Koh Samui compares the areas.

Day 1: Five Islands, Koh Tan and Pig Island by catamaran
Why first? Boat trips depend on the sea. Put yours on Day 1 and you still have two days to reschedule if the weather turns.
Timings
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 9:00–9:40 AM | Hotel pickup (time depends on your area) and transfer to Bang Kao Pier on the south coast |
| 10:30 AM | Depart Bang Kao Pier on the VIP four-engine catamaran (with toilet on board) |
| 11:20 AM | Five Islands (Koh Si Koh Ha): limestone cliffs where swiftlets nest, seen from the boat |
| 11:50 AM | Koh Tan: snorkelling, paddleboard, kayak, floating sea pool, banana boat, springboard and water slide, plus Thai massage on board, all included in the price |
| 12:45 PM | Lunch served on board, with free-flow cocktails, mocktails and soft drinks through the day |
| 2:50 PM | Koh Madsum (Pig Island): see the pigs on the beach and swim in the shallows |
| Late afternoon | Sail back to Bang Kao Pier, then transfer to your hotel |
| ~4:30 PM | Back at your hotel |
Evening
You’ll be tired from the sun, so keep it simple. Shower, then eat near your hotel. If Day 1 falls on a Friday, the Walking Street market at Fisherman’s Village in Bophut is worth the effort (market days can change, so check locally, and see our night markets guide for what to expect).
What to bring
Swimwear, a towel, reef-friendly sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a dry bag for your phone and a light cover-up. Everything else (snorkel gear, lunch, drinks) is on the boat.
Book Day 1
1-Day Catamaran · Adult (12+) ฿3,300 · Child (5–11) ฿1,900 · Under 5 free · Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup · If the weather stops the trip, you get a new date first, with a full refund if that date is also cancelled. Sails with a minimum of 40 guests (new date or full refund if not reached).
Day 2: Temples, villages and waterfalls on a 4×4 safari
Day 2 takes in the inland side of Samui that most beach visitors never see, and you don’t have to hire a driver or work out the roads. Our Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari goes by 4×4 pickup truck and is built around four themes (nature, culture, local life and mountain views).
Timings
| Time | Stop |
|---|---|
| From 9:30 AM | Hotel pickup (time depends on your area) |
| 10:20 AM | Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai), the 12-metre golden Buddha completed in 1972 |
| 10:40 AM | Chaweng Village Experience: the local way of life, making traditional khanom ko, and how villagers approach forest conservation and sustainable living |
| 11:30 AM | Wat Sawang Arom: white ordination hall, murals of Koh Samui stories, and a mummified monk |
| 12:30 PM | Durian orchard and tropical forest, then Wat Teepangkorn, a mountain-top temple |
| 1:00 PM | Lunch with a view |
| 2:30 PM | Namuang Waterfall 1: time to cool off in the pool |
| 3:00 PM | Rubber-tapping demonstration |
| 4:00 PM | Hin Ta & Hin Yai (Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks) near Lamai |
| 4:30 PM | Return to your hotel |
The itinerary may be adjusted for weather.
What to bring
Clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for the temples (or a sarong to put on), swimwear under your clothes for the waterfall, shoes with grip, insect repellent, sunscreen and some cash for snacks such as kalamae (a sticky coconut sweet) at the Hin Ta & Hin Yai stalls.
Evening
Lamai is close to the last stop, so it’s an easy place for dinner. Or head to Chaweng, where Phetchbuncha Stadium holds Muay Thai fight nights on several evenings a week (check the current schedule).
Book Day 2
Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari · Adult ฿1,950 · Child (5–11) ฿1,650 · Under 5 free · Includes hotel transfers, English- and Chinese-speaking guide, lunch, soft drinks and accident insurance.
Day 3: Elephants in the morning, the north coast in the afternoon
Day 3 is lighter on purpose. After two full days, a half-day tour and some free time is about right.
Morning: Samui Elephant Kingdom (about 3 hours)
We pick you up from your hotel in the morning and take you to the sanctuary we support, Samui Elephant Kingdom. You learn what elephants eat, help prepare “Powerball” elephant food, feed the elephants from the Skywalk and finish with lunch and soft drinks. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent.
Book Day 3
Samui Elephant Kingdom · About 3 hours · Morning or afternoon pickup · Adult ฿3,000 · Child (5–11) ฿1,700 · Under 5 free · Lunch and soft drinks included.
Afternoon: Wat Plai Laem and the beach
Afterwards, take a taxi to Wat Plai Laem on the north-east tip, a lakeside temple with an 18-armed Guanyin statue and a large Happy Buddha. You saw the Big Buddha next door on Day 2, so this is a short, easy stop. Spend the rest of the afternoon on the beach. Bophut and Bang Rak are close by, or go back to your hotel’s own beach.
Evening: Fisherman’s Village
Finish your trip with dinner along the old shophouse street at Fisherman’s Village in Bophut. It’s a short ride from the north-east temples, and a pleasant place to watch the light fade over the bay towards Koh Phangan.

Fitting it around your flights
- Arriving late morning or early afternoon on Day 1? Swap Days 1 and 3, and take the afternoon elephant slot on your arrival day. The catamaran then moves to Day 2, which still leaves a day to reschedule.
- Leaving early on Day 3? Skip the elephant visit, since neither full-day tour leaves room for it on Day 1 or 2. If the elephants matter more to you, book their half-day on Day 2 in place of the 4×4 day, and use the spare afternoon for Wat Plai Laem and the beach.
- Allow time for the airport. Samui Airport is in the north-east, close to Chaweng, Bophut and Bang Rak. Check your airline’s recommended check-in time.
Getting around on this Koh Samui 3-day itinerary
- All three tours include hotel transfers, so you only need your own transport on Day 3’s afternoon and in the evenings.
- Taxis on Samui usually quote a fixed fare rather than use the meter. Agree the price before getting in, and ask your hotel what a fair fare is.
- Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run along the ring road (Route 4169) during the day. Flag one down and agree the fare first. They are cheaper but slower.
- Ride-hailing apps work on Samui, but availability can be patchy, especially late at night or away from Chaweng. Have a backup.
- Scooters need a motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category. All three tours provide transfers, so you don’t need one for this plan.
- Distances are short but roads can be slow. Allow extra time in rain or around Chaweng in the evening.

Good to know
- Weather: the heaviest rain usually falls between mid-October and early December, when boat trips are more likely to be postponed. Read our best time to visit Koh Samui guide, and keep our rainy-day ideas handy.
- Book ahead in high season: boat days in particular can fill up. The catamaran has free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, so booking early carries little risk.
- Temple dress: cover shoulders and knees on Day 2 and Day 3.
- With children: all three days work for families. See Koh Samui with kids for pacing tips.
- Want more ideas? Our list of the 30 best things to do in Koh Samui has lots of swaps, and if you have longer, the Koh Samui 5-day itinerary adds a slower pace and more options.

FAQ
Is 3 days enough for Koh Samui?
Yes, for the highlights. Three days gives you one island boat trip, one day for the temples, villages and waterfalls, and a half-day with time on the beach. You won’t fit in Ang Thong National Marine Park or a Koh Phangan day trip as well. For those, plan on five days.
What should I do first in Koh Samui?
Book your boat day for early in your stay. If the sea is too rough, there’s time to move it. Land-based days are much easier to shuffle.
Can I do the catamaran and the elephant visit on the same day?
Not comfortably. The catamaran runs from a 9:00–9:40 AM pickup to a drop-off around 4:30 PM, which doesn’t leave room for a three-hour afternoon tour. Give the elephant visit its own morning or afternoon.
Where should I stay for a 3-day trip?
Chaweng, Bophut, Bang Rak, Choeng Mon or Lamai all work. They are close to restaurants and the airport, and every tour in this plan includes hotel pickup.
What if it rains during my 3 days?
Move the boat day to the driest-looking day if you can. If sea conditions stop the catamaran, you are moved to a new date, with a full refund if that date is also affected. On a wet day, swap in the elephant visit, a cooking class, a Thai massage or Central Samui’s shops and cinema.
How much does this Koh Samui 3-day itinerary cost?
The three tours cost ฿8,250 per adult. For a child aged 5–11 they cost ฿5,250, so a family of two adults and one child pays ฿21,750. Under-5s are free on all three trips, so they add ฿0 to the total. On top of that, budget for your hotel, meals outside the tours, taxis and evening activities.
