The best Koh Samui day trips are not the same for everyone. A family with a four-year-old and a pair of divers should not book the same day, and a trip that is perfect in March may not run at all in late November. This guide ranks seven day trips from Samui by type of traveller, with a comparison table of time, cost, effort and the best months for each.
We run three of these trips ourselves and say so where they come up. The others we recommend because they are good days out, and we have tried to be plain about who should skip each one.
Quick answer: For families and first-timers, a catamaran day to the Five Islands, Koh Tan and Pig Island. For scenery and a bit of hiking, Ang Thong Marine Park (closed 1 November to 15 December 2026). For the best snorkelling, Koh Tao and Nang Yuan. For culture or a rough-sea day, a 4×4 island safari. For a short, easy half day, an elephant sanctuary visit or Namuang Waterfall.

The best Koh Samui day trips by type of traveller
Families with young children
First choice: the southern islands by catamaran. Short crossings, a toilet on board, child-size life jackets, shade and a long swim stop. Pig Island is the part most children remember. Also good: the half-day elephant visit and Namuang Waterfall 1, which is a five-minute walk from the car park. Skip: Koh Tao, which means a long, bumpy crossing, and the Ang Thong viewpoint climb with toddlers. Our Koh Samui with kids guide has more.
Couples
First choice: Ang Thong, if your dates miss the closure. Kayaking under limestone cliffs and the view over the Emerald Lake make it the most photogenic day around Samui. Also good: Koh Phangan on your own, with a driver to the quieter west-coast beaches, or a slow catamaran day with a massage on deck. Our honeymoon guide covers evenings too.
Snorkellers
First choice: Koh Tao and Nang Yuan. The water is usually clearer than closer to Samui, and Nang Yuan’s sandbar and viewpoint are well known. Easiest: Koh Tan off the south coast, which suits beginners and families; see our Koh Tan snorkelling guide. Ang Thong has some snorkelling, but people go there for the scenery.
Culture and local life
First choice: a 4×4 island safari. Temples, a village stop, orchards and a waterfall in one day, with someone else driving the steep roads. Add the Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem on another morning if you want more; our Big Buddha guide explains the temple etiquette.
Adventure
First choice: Ang Thong, for the steep climb to the Koh Wua Talap viewpoint and a paddle between the islands. Also good: the hike to Namuang 2, a dive day at Sail Rock if you are certified, or a Koh Tao speedboat day if you have a strong stomach.
Each day trip in more detail
1. Five Islands, Koh Tan and Pig Island
These three stops sit off Samui’s south and south-west coast, so the sea time is short. The Five Islands are limestone stacks where swiftlets nest, seen from the boat. Koh Tan is the easiest reef to snorkel from Samui, and Pig Island (Koh Madsum) has the beach pigs. You can do it by longtail or speedboat from Thong Krut in half a day, or on a full-day boat with lunch. Our catamaran is the easiest way to see all three in one day without arranging boats yourself.
2. Ang Thong Marine Park
Mu Ko Ang Thong is a national park of 42 islands about 30 km west of Samui. The classic day includes the Emerald Lake (Thale Nai) viewpoint on Koh Mae Ko, the steep 500-metre trail to the viewpoint on Koh Wua Talap, and kayaking. It is a long day, often eight to ten hours door to door, and the park fee (฿300 per foreign adult, ฿150 per child) is often paid separately.
Current status: the park is open now, in early October 2026, and closes from 1 November to 15 December 2026 under the national parks department’s annual closure list. It can also close for a day at short notice in rough seas. If your dates fall in the closure, our Ang Thong closed guide lists what still runs, and Ang Thong or Pig Island helps if you only have time for one.
3. Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan is 20 to 45 minutes away by ferry from Maenam, Bangrak, Big Buddha or Nathon, so you can do it on your own. Land at Thong Sala, hire a driver for the day, and pick two or three beaches or viewpoints rather than trying to see the whole island. Check the last boat back on the operator’s site, such as Lomprayah, and avoid the days around the Full Moon Party unless that is why you are going.
4. Koh Tao and Nang Yuan
Speedboat day tours from Samui usually take seven to eight hours, with snorkelling stops around Koh Tao and time on Nang Yuan, three small islands joined by a sandbar. Nang Yuan charges its own entry fee in cash, reported at between ฿100 and ฿250 per adult. The crossing to Koh Tao is long and open, so this is the trip to skip if you get seasick, if the wind is up, or if you have small children.
5. 4×4 island safari
A safari covers the island’s hilly interior in an open-backed 4×4, with temples, viewpoints, a waterfall and lunch. It suits nearly everyone aged five and up and still runs when the sea is too rough for boats. Our Explore the Real Samui 4×4 Island Safari costs from ฿1,950 per adult and ฿1,650 per child aged 5–11, and under 5s go free. If you are choosing between a safari and a quad bike tour, read our jeep safari vs ATV guide.

6. Samui Elephant Kingdom
Samui Elephant Kingdom is an elephant sanctuary that Samui Journey supports and books visits to; we do not own it. It is a half-day visit, so it fits around a beach afternoon or a day when the sea says no. Prices with us are ฿3,000 per adult and ฿1,700 per child, and under 5s go free. The visitor guide walks through the visit.
7. Namuang waterfalls
Namuang 1 drops about 18 metres into a pool you can swim in, a short walk from the road. Namuang 2 is about 80 metres high in several tiers, at the top of a steep 30–40 minute climb, and people have died falling there. Go to Namuang 1 for an easy stop; go to Namuang 2 only with proper shoes and dry weather. Our Namuang waterfall guide has the safety detail.

Planning your Koh Samui day trips
- Put boat days early in your stay. If the weather moves one, you still have days left. On our catamaran, bad weather means a new date first, then a full refund if that date is also hit.
- One long day at a time. Ang Thong or Koh Tao followed by another early start is tiring. Put a beach day or a half-day trip in between.
- Watch the wind. From mid-October to early December the north-east monsoon makes the Gulf rougher, and longer crossings feel it most. The Thai Meteorological Department posts sea warnings.
- Mix sea and land. A typical five-day stay works well with one boat day, one land day and a half day with elephants or at a waterfall. Our 5-day itinerary shows one way to do it.
- Know what you are not getting. Our catamaran does not go to Ang Thong, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. Our guides speak English and Chinese. For private or custom days, see our private tours page.
